Haeckels In Japan

We’ve been working on something incredibly special in Japan for the last year and we wanted to share this with you first.

Partnering with local fishing communities, high school students and eco tourists in the Okayama Prefecture we have recently harvested what is known as Amamo Grass or more commonly Eel Grass. This specific seagrass can only be harvested once a year and with the support of local government we have been able to harvest enough for our production. This is the first time this has been possible and an incredibly exciting opportunity for the local economy.

As we expand our business in Japan we aim to use local ingredients to prevent any unnecessary air freight and carbon footprint of our existing seaweed harvest being transported from the UK.

This specific seagrass is native to Japan and has multiple uses. Initially we will be using this polyphenol rich natural ingredient within our soap bars available in Japan before expanding into several other new areas.

Polyphenol has a number of benefits within your skincare ritual and tests have shown that it can increase blood flow around the body, increase levels of oxygen to the skin along with helping to protect from the suns UV rays.

The grass will now be cleaned, dehydrated and prepared for production. We’ll keep you up to date with progress here on the journal and over on our Instagram account @madeofmargate
