RamMix
Beibei’s RamMix project is pioneering the integration of biodesign with clothing and textiles, introducing innovative solutions that align with Haeckels’ ethos of minimising waste and celebrating natural resources. Driven by her passion for plant-based materials and the re-utilisation of agricultural waste, the multidisciplinary fashion designer is tackling the challenges of sustainable fashion design.
Ramie, a crop unique to the southwest of China, accounts for 90% of global ramie fibre production and has mainly been used in the local textile industry. But in recent years, unstable climate and resource scarcity have led to a reduction in ramie cultivation, resulting in cultural loss and economic decline for the region. In recognition of her efforts to address these challenges, Beibei’s RamMix project was recently named the winner of the Maison/0 Green Trail 2024, an annual competition that highlights the best nature-positive graduating projects across design disciplines at Central Saint Martins.
The RamMix project aims to design a biodegradable jacket system that allows users to mix and match different elements to their liking. By replacing traditional chemical extraction methods with biotechnology, the project creates a diverse range of eco-conscious materials that are then combined with the production techniques of Shu brocade, a traditional Chinese fabric. The resulting weaving patterns are applied to different clothing pieces, while the surplus waste from ramie is repurposed into biodegradable buttons.
The seamless integration of biotechnology and traditional craft is a key aspect of the RamMix project. Processes such as dyeing the ramie fibres with pigments extracted from ramie leaves and roots, and weaving the fibres with varying degrees of degumming on a table loom, demonstrate the project’s commitment to the circular economy. Each customisable element of the jacket, from the length and sleeves to the pockets and buttons, is a testament to Beibei’s holistic design approach.
At Haeckels, we are inspired by the RamMix project’s ability to honour the rich cultural heritage of ramie production in southwest China while advancing sustainable innovation. This bio-informed methodology not only minimises waste and environmental impact but also pays tribute to the time-honoured traditions of the local community. Beibei’s success in developing a diverse range of textile and material applications from a single plant resource serves as a compelling model for our approach, as we continuously seek to optimise the potential of natural resources and explore innovative applications for what was once considered waste.
Aligned with our core values, the RamMix project’s emphasis on customisation and user-centric design encourages us to explore how to mix and match ingredients to create truly personalised, one-of-a-kind products for our customers. This approach resonates with our commitment to delivering tailored solutions that meet specific customer needs while driving sustainable practices.
As the fashion and beauty industries increasingly prioritise sustainability, the RamMix project exemplifies how biodesign can unlock a world of innovative possibilities. Looking ahead, we are dedicated to furthering our exploration of biotechnology, integrating these insights to develop cutting-edge solutions that enhance both our product offerings and our environmental impact. Through continued innovation and a deep respect for cultural and ecological values, we aim to lead in creating sustainable, nature-positive advancements in our industry.
