Community Sauna

"We envisioned creating more than just a sauna—we wanted to build a year-round destination that brings people together and celebrates our coastline in every season. Inspired by the communal spirit of Reykjavik's saunas, we set out to create something that could unite communities all along Britain's shores."
- Dom Bridges
By the shores of Margate, the community sauna has become a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike. This unique seaside spot offers more than just a relaxing escape - it's a vibrant hub that brings the community together in meaningful ways.
We believe that the healing power of coastal wellbeing should be freely accessible to all, which is why we built this community sauna. Our journey began in 2014 with a dream and a Kickstarter campaign that raised over £30,000 to build our Sea Bathing Machine. Each supporter's name is permanently laser-etched on its walls—a testament to the power of community coming together.
The rich history of original sea bathing machines runs deep in Margate, and this was another beautiful way to pay homage to the town's roots. The sauna has been operating full-time since 2018 after being granted a temporary licence for usage on Margate Main Sands. Since 2020, the sauna has found a permanent home at Walpole Bay, nestled right next to the tidal pool - a place where sauna users can enjoy the cool water.
Our intention with the sauna was to first and foremost give back to the beloved local community, and secondly, to inspire people to get out on the beaches even during the colder months - something the sauna has so joyfully achieved. It is operated by a team of dedicated volunteers and is funded by us, with additional donations from the local community.
The sauna is designed with the local community and environment in mind. We proudly source our firewood from sustainably managed forests right here in the UK, ensuring a clean, nourishing experience for all who visit. The ash from the stove is lovingly composted at the nearby Windmill Community Gardens, helping to enrich the soil and support the growth of local produce. Every material chosen has been carefully selected to stand up to the salty, coastal conditions, guaranteeing the longevity of this special community space.
The true impact of our community sauna was recently brought to light through an assessment. Out of the 80 visitors who shared their experiences, 48% expressed that the sauna had a profound, uplifting effect on their social life. An incredible 68.1% of those reported experiencing a wonderful, restorative positive impact on their connection with the local environment.
"It's a real treat to spend time there with friends - a form of socialising that doesn't involve going to a pub/bar/restaurant. I also met the person I'm now dating in the sauna!"
"I have met so many locals, learned so much about our community and what's going on, I have become involved in various groups and been part of the conversation to ensure our community continues to thrive."
These moving testimonials highlight the power of bringing people together around a shared experience of coastal wellbeing. The sauna is so much more than just a place to unwind - it has become an integral part of the vibrant Margate community. As we look to the future, we are committed to ensuring this special gathering place continues to thrive, fostering connections and enriching the lives of all who visit.
