Empowering Skin Wellness through Bio-Inspired Textile Innovation

Beyond Flares

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin condition affecting millions worldwide. Characterised by persistent inflammation, pruritus, discomfort, and fissured skin, AD substantially impacts not just physical health, but also the social interactions and psychological well-being of affected individuals.

Recent years have witnessed escalating concerns regarding the adverse effects associated with the prolonged use of steroids and corticosteroids. Coupled with the lack of targeted, efficient and safer alternatives for severe AD cases, this has left many searching for gentler, more sustainable solutions. Patients are increasingly seeking alternatives that not only benefit their skin but also aid them in effectively self-managing their symptoms.

Ilaria Quintè, with her unique background in luxury fashion, material development and sustainable design, brings a fresh perspective to the challenge of managing AD.

The core of Beyond Flares lies in its groundbreaking approach: textiles that transcend their traditional role to offer enhanced benefits to the wearer. These innovative fabrics are infused with pigments extracted from microalgae, which are rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and synthesised bacteria extracts. The result is a textile designed for a close relationship with the skin, serving a dual purpose: to alleviate inflammatory symptoms such as itching and to protect the skin from external bacteria.

What sets this project apart is its alignment with sustainable practices. By harnessing nature’s tools – microalgae and beneficial bacteria – Beyond Flares represents a shift towards more eco-friendly solutions in skincare and textile production. This approach resonates deeply with our values at Haeckels, where we constantly seek to push the boundaries of natural skincare.

The potential impact of Beyond Flares is significant. For those living with AD, these textiles could offer a new way to manage their condition, empowering them with a sustainable solution that promotes self-management of symptoms whilst improving overall skin health. It’s not just about treating the condition; it’s about enhancing the quality of life through innovative, bio-inspired design.

This project represents the kind of innovation we believe in – solutions that are not only effective but also sustainable and deeply considerate of people and the planet’s wellbeing.
