1% For The Planet

1% For The Planet

What is it?

In 2002, the founder of Patagonia Yvon Chouinard and friend Craig Mathews created 1% for the Planet. Committing to donating 1% of their annual sales to local environmental groups every year, whether their businesses were profitable or not. The idea is simple and now feels obvious. As businesses that exist and profit out of the resources of our local environment, we are undoubtedly and morally responsible for protecting it. Ideally leaving it in a better state than when we found it.

Since its inception, 1%FTP has become a network of 4,000 like-minded businesses that have donated over $270 Million to certified grass-roots environmental groups. The now vast network of members allows individuals and businesses to donate smarter, through an extensive list and variety of verified non-profits. Allowing members to have an engaged local impact, or a targeted specific one if they wish.

How does it work?

!% for the Planet was founded to prevent greenwashing, certify reputable giving and provide accountability. The 1% for the Planet certification is given to businesses and individuals that meet our high-bar commitment—donate 1% of annual sales or salary to environmental causes.

When donating to a cause, no money is taken by 1% for the Planet. We donate directly to the cause and pay a membership fee to 1% for the Planet instead. We then log our donations on the platform to be checked and certified. This verifies we’re doing what we promised for our customers.

How we’re using it?

Local Impact

We chose to become members of 1%FTP in order to hold ourselves truly accountable on a local level. Being able to give back and protect the local ecosystem from which we take and owe so much, if not everything. Whilst we have always supported local environmental groups, and given well over 1% of our annual sales away, by becoming an official member of 1%FTP, we are able to be fully transparent with where those donations are going.

Through 1%FTP we will be committing not only to monetary donations but also to organised volunteering by our team, as well as product donations if/where appropriate. Furthering our involvement in the local community and environment.

Lasting Impact

By joining the network of other 1FTP members, we ourselves have not only joined other businesses committed to doing their part. By becoming a member, we have gained access to almost 5,000 verified non-profit partners that 1%FTP members can donate to. Whilst we will plan on keeping our impact in donations as local as we can, we have also verified our main non-profit we have supported for the last 8 years. Which adds them to the 1%FTP roster, giving them the publicity the deserve, as well as exposure to more potential donors.

Joining A Likeminded Network Of Businesses

Becoming a member of 1%FTP, we join a host of businesses we have long admired including Patagonia.

Why Now?

It’s well overdue, and admittedly we’re late in officially holding ourself accountable. We fully acknowledge that joining 1% for the Planet is by no means a solution to our impact on the environment and we are constantly striving to improve. However, it is the start of us holding ourselves publicly and formally responsible.
